My Body, My Government’s Choice

Today, June 24, 2022 is a devastating day in history for our country and more importantly for women in our country. Today nearly 50 years of activists’ progress and advances to protect women’s reproductive rights has been shattered in an instant.

In those nearly 50 years countless activists who have dedicated their being to making sure that women across our country can access legal, safe and sanitary abortions performed by professional healthcare providers has been taken away.

Because being a woman in today’s nefarious society wasn’t scary enough being a woman just got that much more threatening.

As a Pro-Choice advocate I’m angry. As a young, single woman I’m absolutely terrified.

How did we get to this point? Well it all started with the draft opinion written by the decrepit, white, male associate justice of the Supreme Court Samuel Alito claiming that abortion is not a constitutional right. Yeah, okay. Go fuck yourself.

And now as of today, June 24, 2022 the foreboding glimpse at the possibility of our constitutional right to safe and legal abortions has been taken away as Roe v. Wade has officially been overruled.

What does this mean for women across the country?

It means that the authority to regulate abortion has been “returned to the people” so now each state’s elected representatives have the power to determine if abortion will or will not be legal.

Oh, and NEARLY HALF of the states have the ban on abortion TAKING EFFECT WITHIN A MONTH and for those women who are already pregnant this will prevent them from seeking medical care. Several other states are likely to follow suit and ban abortion as well.

Along with that the overturn of Roe v. Wade any doctor who performs an abortion could be held liable and subject to possible lawsuits and imprisonment. It’s all so fucked up.

Today, decades of work fought for by women’s rights activists has been rolled back because of a decision made by a Supreme Court made up of primarily conservative, old, white men.

This decision has now left millions of women unsafe, unseen and unprotected.

It’s a shattering loss of rights. Women’s rights are HUMAN RIGHTS and abortion is basic health care. Let me say it louder for the people in the back. ABORTION IS BASIC HEALTH CARE. Keep your policies off of our bodies. Making abortion illegal is not going to stop women from getting abortions it’s just going to stop women from getting safe abortions.

If you’re feeling just as unhinged as I am about this devastating blow to women’s rights here’s a few things you should know and what you can do.

1. Being Pro-Choice Doesn’t Mean You’re Pro Abortion

Being pro-choice means you believe that every woman should be able to choose whatever the hell she wants to do with her body.

2. It Could Be Possible That Those Who Receive Abortions Could Also Face Legal Consequences

It was reported that in the beginning of April 2022, a 26-year-old woman was charged with murder in Texas for “death of an individual by self-induced abortion” after receiving the medial procedure. The woman was then placed in jail with a $500,000 bond. The case was later dismissed but it’s a scary look at what the possible future could look like post-Roe v. Wade.

3. The Supreme Court Has Ended Our Constitutional Right To Abortion

4. Here’s What You Can Do Right Now-

Today is a grim day in our country’s history and with such a radical decision for the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade it’s also sparked fear and the topic of conversation for what the future of contraceptives and same-sex marriage will look like.

We have the right to be heard.
